HOW TO REPAIR SUN DAMAGE TO THE NECK AND CHEST

10 Oct, 2017

Our chest and neck area cops the sun day in and day out, and can be one of the areas you see sun damage first. We are drilled with applying sunscreen to our faces daily but can neglect the chest and neck area.
Sun damage on the chest and neck can take the appearance of a motley red and brown colour as both pigment and capillaries intertwin to form a ruddy complexion known as Poikiloderma. Poikiloderma is common on the chest and neck area and can be amplified through the application of perfumes, lots of sun exposure and skin care that makes your skin photosensitive.Poikiloderma consists of hypopigmentation (white spots), hyperpigmentation (brown spots), telangiectasias (broken capillaries) and atrophy (degeneration of cells).

What Treatments work best for Poikiloderma:

Laser proves to be the most effective treatment for sun damage and poikiloderma to the neck and chest area. Pending on the laser you are treated with will depend on the sessions required with some needing up to 3 or 4 sessions. Skin colour and depth of sun damage will also determine how many sessions you require.

Other Skin Care treatments such as our Red Carpet Ready Facial will oxygenate, hydrate, firm and tighten the neck area and exfoliate the skin all in the one treatment. This is one of the best treatments one can undertake to care for their neck and chest area on a regular basis.

What Skin Care Products assist with prevention of Sun Damage to the Neck and Chest area:

  1. Sunscreen is the number 1 product you would use. Prevention of damage is the way to go! If you rely on your SPF from your make up, make sure you cover your neck and chest area too! Otherwise apply a mineral sunscreen under your make up and apply to the chest and neck as well. Your Makeup is then an additional bonus of SPF protection. Try Osmosis Protect SPF 30 or Aspect Hydrashield SPF 15 – both non greasy and mineral only – no nasties
  2. Vitamin A and lightening products can assist in lightening pigmentation and the damage to the collagen on the chest and neck area. Keep in mind to always use sunscreen daily if using Retinol (vitamin A) products as these will make you sun sensitive. Try Aspect Retinol Brulee or Skin Matrix Rebuild
  3. Antioxidants in the form of Vitamin C, pomegranate and green tea extract, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and beta glucan are great ingredients to look for in your skin care. Try Aspect Extreme C and  Skin Matrix Skin Perfection Serum
