EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT SKIN NEEDLING

31 May, 2016

10 Years ago the Beauty industry was all about going as hard as possible on the skin to renew the skin and turn back the clock. But the industry in part has learnt from the past and the trend these days is to create as little trauma as possible to the skin, but still enough so that the skin regenerates and produces collagen and remains happy. Don't get me wrong there is a place for CO2 ablative lasers which ablate the epidermis to promote skin regeneration but the side effects could potentially outweigh the positives.

Healthy skin I believe requires commitment to skin care and treatments not a miracle quick fix.

Skin Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) was introduced around 8 years ago and is growing more popular every year. With many of my clients fitting a course of CIT in to their yearly skin care regime it is certainly something I do and love doing every year!

Here are some facts on Skin Needling Or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT):

  • Skin Needling or CIT uses very fine, sterile needles to create many micro-channels in the skin to produce lots of collagen. You have a topical anesthetic on the skin so you are numb and feel no pain. The tiny perforations release cytokines which trigger the wound-healing process. Collagen is a fibrous protein which forms the scaffolding of the skin and contributes to the skin integrity. Collagen is put into overdrive to repair and regenerate the skin, creating a thicker dermis and a more youthful appearance.
  • Skin Needling is performed for anti-ageing, large pores, scars including acne scars, refining the skin, even complexion, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and skin texture.
  • After your skin needling session, type III collagen and elastin is produced which forms part of the extra cellular matrix of the skin. Once the skin goes into the remodelling phase weeks later, type I collagen and elastin is formed.
  • After your session you are pink/red for 24 hours and the next 24 hours you are approximately 50% less in redness and more than likely able to cover the redness with make up.  Day 3 most cases the pink has gone perhaps 5-10% lef. You can wear a mineral make up approx 30 minutes after your session.
  • Day 3-4 you will experience the skin feeling dry and tight, you may get very light flaking. After an exfoliation your skin will be soft and supple again.
  • As soon as the skin returns to normal colour I recommend you start back on your skin care actives to further enhance and provide support for the new collagen growth and to keep the skin hydrated.
  • The results take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to take effect.
  • For optimal results 3 sessions, 6 weeks apart is recommended
  • Collagen Induction therapy is safe with no negative side effects
