BENEFITS OF NIACINAMIDE IN SKIN CARE

10 Nov, 2014

So what's all the fuss about Niacinamide in Skin Care?

The latest buzz word in the beauty scene is Niacinamide (vitamin B3). This is because this vitamin has so many positive benefits when applied topically to the skin. I have not been this excited about an ingredient since discovering the amazing benefits of Vitamin A many many years ago. So here is the low down on our soon to become favourite ingredient .... Niacinamide (or Vitamin B3):

  • Niacinamide is a potent cell-communicating ingredient that offers multiple benefits for aging skin.
  • Amazing antioxidant capacity - Niacinamide increases the antioxidant capacity of skin after topical application by increasing the reduced forms (NADPH), which have potent antioxidant properties. This is probably the most well-studied anti-aging effect of niacinamide. (ref 1.)
  • Niacinamide can improve skin's elasticity (when used with sunscreen)
  • It can dramatically enhance skin barrier function through the increase in ceramides and intercellular lipids (ref 1.)
  • It is thought to play a role in the prevention of the Maillard Reaction that occurs in ageing skins. As we age our sugars and proteins in the skin cross-link giving the skin a yellow colour. Niacinamide can prevent this oxidation process from occurring. (ref 1.)
  • Topical niacinamide may be effective in decreasing pigmentation that is associated with the ageing process.
  • Niacinamide has been proven to stimulate collagen synthesis and the epidermal proteins keratin. In addition, another study was able to show niacinamide's ability to increase dermal matrix collagen production. (ref 1.)
  • It stimulates microcirculation in the skin, giving the skin a healthy glow
  • It prevents the skin from losing moisture content through its ability to increase ceramides and free fatty acids in the skin.
  • Treats the red marks left behind from acne breakouts and assists in acne control/prevention
"These cofactors and their reduced forms (NADH and NADPH) serve as reduction-oxidation (redox) coenzymes in more than 40 cellular biochemical reactions. Thus, niacinamide has the potential to exert multiple effects on skin and is a promising anti-aging cosmeceutical ingredient." (ref 1.)   "It is the opinion of the authors that niacinamide is one of the best studied cosmeceutical ingredients for anti-aging." (ref 1.)
