Sick of waxing and shaving? Sick of nasty ingrown hairs? Well, laser hair removal is for you, to rid yourself of hair forever leaving smooth silky skin. How does laser work?
The Gentlelase laser, is revolutionary long-pulse high energy alexandrite laser that emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. The skin is further protected during treatment by a dynamic cooling device where cryogen is sprayed on the skin, cooling the upper layers and providing patients with increased comfort. The Gentlelase helps to protect the skin, while effectively treating unwanted hair. The Gentlelase is a Class 4 Alexandrite Medical Laser. It has been approved by the FDA to state that is safe and has been tested to meet standards set within the industry. It is one of the safest on the market as it contains a unique and superior colling device. Once the laser pulses on the skin the cryogen cooling gas sprays onto the skin also within a micro second, cooling the surface of the skin preventing any negative side effects. Skin Matrix staff have over 8 years experience in the Laser Industry, so you can rest assured that you will receive the ultimate in laser safety advice, skin care advice for pre and post care and information on how the laser works. See our articles section for information onthe benefits of using Laser vs IPL for hair removal. What to expect
Prior to your appointment we ask that you shave the area that you would like us to treat. This will safe valuable time within the appointment and allow us to start on time. A small hand piece is used with a gauge at the end. The gauge sits on the skin whilst the laser is emitted through it on to the skin. A light spray of coolant gas, cryogen is sprayed onto the skin with each laser pulse. You will also wear protective eye glasses during the procedure, this is to protect your eyes from the laser. The sensation can be likened to a flick of an elastic band onto the skin, this sensation is not even a second in length. Topical anaesthetic, Emla can also be applied at least 1 hour prior to treatment to reduce pain up to 60%. This can be purchased from a Chemist where they will give you instructions on to how to use the product. For smaller areas we have an Anaesthetic available in the clinic which has a quicker activiating time, it only needs to be applied 20 minutes prior to your treatment. Talk with your Aesthetician as to the best anaesthetic suited for the area to be treated and costs. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner in advance.
The treated area may become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment, this may last from a few hours to a few days and is relieved with the ice cooling gels. We apply aloe vera gel straight away after your treatment and advise the use of this gel for 1-2 hours post treatment until the area is cool once again. We sell the aloe vera gel for only $10.
What precautions need to be made before and after treatment?
- Avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks before and after treatment unless otherwise specified by your practitioner
- No waxing, no depilatories or electrolysis 4-6 weeks prior
- If you have a history of perioral herpes, an antiviral medication should be taken or applied topically.
- No heavy exercise, hot showers, saunas for 24 hours
- No swimming for 48 hours
- Apply the aloe vera gel as specified by your Aesthetician
- Discuss all expectations with your practitioner so you are clear on the results you are likely to expect.
How many treatments will I need?
Your hair grows in cycles, the laser only treats the hair that is in the Anagen Phase of the growth cycle. Why? Well, when the hair is in the Anagen Phase it is connected to the bulb and this is exactly what the laser needs so it can reach the bulb of the hair to destroy it. Each treatmnet you can expect to lose approximately 20% if hair. The number of treatments also depends on your skin colour, hair colour and coarseness of the hair. The darker the skin type the more treatments that will be required as we will have to treat your skin at a different setting so we protect your skin. As the laser is attracted to pigment (melanin) it is also attracted the pigment in your skin. Unfortunately the laser does not know the difference between hair and skin. The Alexandrite laser is very safe for darker skin types. An average of 6 treamtents is recommended and for the facial areas if you have a hormonal condition such as polycistic ovaries you may require more treatments as their is a hormonal influence on your hair growth. Upon presentation of a letter from your Doctor stating the condition is present, we will offer you reduced prices as you will need more treatments.
